Training Day #2 - Afton

What a great night to be outside, but I must admit, my calves haven’t fully healed from last week. John pushed us to run 3 minutes and walk 2 minutes. We also tackled a hill for the first time. My asthma acted up a couple of time and I thought I was going to die. But John motivating me to go those last 30 seconds and I was able to push through the pain. It’s been three weeks since I quit smoking, and I am loving every minute of it. I think I might have to stretch my calve out quite a bit before next session; it was really tight today. Janelle brought her friend Cindy today to take some pics, so enjoy watching the pain on our faces.
John pushing me to keep on trucking!
We are smiling just for the camera, I swear

Hike #1 - Janelle

I've hiked before, don't get me wrong, but a 6 day 5 night trek is going to be a daunting task! I'm giving myself a year to get ready, but I must admit I am more nervous to do a half marathon in Prague. Afton and I have been to training once last week, and we ran/walked 6km in 45 minutes....not too bad for first time runners!

Saturday, I hit up Kananaskis with the JIM Machu Picchu group. They've done a few altitude training sessions, but I haven't been in the mountains for almost exactly a year. The slope we first attacked was almost vertical. Everyone had a rough time, especially because of the unstable terrain. It was a challenge, but I kept up with all the other JIM hikers and was happy with my performance. JIM trainer John came along as well, and was his usually peppy self! We'll be talking about John a lot, since he is the one teaching Afton and I how to run.

Next marathon training day is Thursday, so keep checking back for updates. I will be taking photos to post for our before pictures.

Our Mission

We are participating in two separate Joints-in-Motion trips to raise money for arthritis research. Together, with your support, we can reach our fundraising goal.

Afton Hayduk is training to run a half marathon in Prague March 2012. She needs to raise $6500.00. Janelle Lane will also be running in Prague on her own dime to raise money for the Joints-in-Moiton Iceland trek in July 2012. She needs to raise $8500.00.

This blog is for any of our supporters, and even strangers to keep track of our progress in training and fundraising. Both Afton and Janelle are using their respective events as motivators to reach their individual fitness goals. We will both make blog posts on our training process, and the roadblocks we hit along the way.

There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and my family, like many others, has members that have to live with the pain of arthritis. Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. It can keep people from living their lives to the fullest, and makes a half-marathon in Prague and a trek in Iceland virtually impossible. We appreciate how fortunate we are to have healthy joints. We hope the money we raise will help those with the degenerative joint disease complete their own adventure.

Any amount will help us reach our goals. But most importantly, We want to spread the word about the importance of arthritis funding. Arthritis is among the top three most common chronic disease in Canada. While most cases are not fatal, the pain can be unbearable. Juvenile arthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases in children; one in 1000 children in Canada has arthritis. Yes KIDS can get arthritis! There are over 4 million canadians with the disease, so help me help them.
